Edify the Church (Pt 1Notes)

1Corinthians 15:9-10
“For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I but the grace of God which was with me.”
How do we edify the church?
1 Corinthians 14 KJV
1 “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries [Ampl – secret truths and hidden things not obvious to the understanding.].

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful…
Two things… 1. Unknown tongues is coming from my spirit. And…
2. It bypasses my brain!
Ampl. V14 “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit by the Holy Spirit within
me prays, …”
Two things… 1. It’s the Holy Spirit through my spirit.
2. The Holy Spirit is the source of speaking in tongues, not me!

3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
1 Corinthians 14 KJV
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Tongues & interpretation are PROPHECY in a DIFFERENT FORM.
1 Corinthians 14 KJV
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine ?”
AMPC 1 Corinthians 13:13c “…love – true affection for God and man, growing out of God’s love for and in us,…”
AMPC 1 Corinthians 14:1 “Eagerly pursue and seek to acquire this love, make it your aim, your great quest;…”
1Corinthians 12:31 KJV
31 But covet (seek after) earnestly the best gifts; and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
Possibly three reasons this disagreement comes out:
1. They’re afraid of the other gifts.
2. They don’t understand about the other gifts.
3. Just don’t want to deal with it because it takes work to balance what God wants and you have to pursue Him.

4 The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
Proverbs 15:23 KJV
23 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

Romans 8:26-27 KJV
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
